Symptoms of Schizophrenia

The symptoms of schizophrenia are generally divided into three categories - Positive, Negative, and Cognitive:

  • Positive Symptoms - behaviors/thoughts that manifest as a result of the disorder
    • delusions
    • hallucinations
  • Negative Symptoms - absence of behaviors of characteristics
    • emotional flatness or lack of expression
    • inability to start and follow through with activities
    • speech that is brief and devoid of content
    • lack of pleasure or interest in life.  "Negative" does not refer to a person's attitude but to a lack of certain characteristics that should be there
  • Cognitive Symptoms - disorders affect on the thought process
    • difficulty with prioritizing tasks
    • difficulty with certain kinds of memory functions
    • difficulty organizing thoughts
    • lack of insight into the difficulties experienced related to the disorder
