Compass Beginnings

Founded in 1998 by Mark Cullen, Compass Health began providing mental health services through a partnership with other rural Southwest Louisiana healthcare providers. Out of this experience grew a community mental health center and a mental health rehab agency serving residents of Lafayette, Vermilion, Iberia, and Acadia Parishes.

A short while later, a partnership with the local hospital was developed. Mark discovered the unique struggles that face community hospitals and began to explore solutions that would meet the needs of healthcare organizations and the patients they serve. These efforts led to multiple community hospital partnerships and the development of a regional behavioral health system covering all levels of care such as inpatient psychiatric services, intensive outpatient services, and outpatient services.

History of Relationships

Compass Health’s growth can be directly attributed to a history of collaboration and support of its employees in healthcare facilities they serve. Compass’ ability to identify needs, formulate solutions, and implement changes has led to positive, long lasting relationships with healthcare leaders. The resilient team of Compass professionals has a proven track record of turning around underperforming organizations and service lines. It takes dedication, strong strategic planning, implementing the plan, and a will to succeed. The result – clinically and financially sound systems of care.

Compass has a “customer service” approach to all endeavors. We strive to identify methods of developing customer friendly models of care, improving satisfaction among patients, their families, and referral sources. An important customer is the host hospital. Compass strives to incorporate the mission and goals of the healthcare organization we serve. By doing this, we create a win-win relationship that positively impacts the communities we serve.

Organizations that lead the healthcare initiative are important to us. Compass is a member of the Louisiana Hospital Association and has representatives on its Behavioral Health Constituency Group. Additionally, Compass Health is a member of the National Association of Behavioral Health, the Association of Ambulatory Behavioral Health, and the Louisiana Rural Health Association. Involvement in these organizations keeps us engaged in advocacy issues involving health law, regulations, and advisories that affect healthcare decisions.

Finally, Compass values its employees. We seek strong people who not only possess the needed skill sets, but also possess values that are inherent to Compass – honesty, integrity, and dedication. The contributions of our employees are important. We encourage ideas, solutions, and suggestions, and reward innovation and success, realizing that we are only as good as our people.
